450 Mbps Chipset

January 31st, 2008 by Dave

Computer users nowadays want faster and more efficient gadgets because they are always on the go and trying to beat the deadlines no matter which part of the globe they are in. And in order to meet this demand, other people and companies are already trying to create a chipset that would be able to cope up with a fast-paced life of a person. That drive to achieve and be able to develop something better pushes people to their limits in inventing things that enables man to live an easier life.

Through the patience and careful planning of Marvell, a semiconductor maker was able to design and create a chipset far better than the others in terms of speed and distance range. This chipset is faster than the current chipsets in the market. The TopDog wireless 802.11n chipsets utilize three receivers and three transmitters. With this new ingenuity, the said chipset is able to reach speeds up to 450 Megabits per second (Mbps) at maximum. That’s an additional speed of 380 Mbps when compared to WiMax’s 70 Mbps chipset.

And with WiFi booming, people are looking for means of getting faster connections. Having faster connections means getting the job done easily and when the job is finished, people can jump and work on something else. Constantly, this search has made man more meticulous in choosing the right devices that would suit their needs. They sometimes stumble upon gadgets that really don’t meet their standards but they have to make do with what is already out.

With this breakthrough, other semiconductor manufacturers would have a hard time toppling off this latest thing on the technology ladder. In addition to its speed, the chipset is said to be able to increase the signal range by 160 percent. Moreover, the TopDog wireless chipset can provide 500% wireless range.

That gives users a better chance of being able to connect to the internet without having trouble finding a signal. And because of its speed, users are now able to access websites and exchange data without waiting too long for the information to be sent. These innovations are vital for the growth of the world’s technology. And with the constant release of new gadgets such as these, perhaps it will not take long for the world to become a paperless society.

The chipset is the first of its kind thus setting a higher standard for the other companies on the same field. Though this chipset has not yet been released in the market, it is scheduled to be ready for mass shipment on the second quarter of this year.

Canon PowerShot A590 IS

January 31st, 2008 by Dave

It was just recently that Canon launched another point-and-shoot camera to its list. The Canon PowerShot A590 IS has added something not common to the other cameras. A new detection technology that reduces motion blur on the pictures captured.

This gadget has an 8.0 mega pixel camera and is capable of a 4x zoom. This camera was created to have a new easy mode and users have full control over this thing. It too has a 2.5 inch LCD with an optical viewfinder. In addition, future and current owner of the A590 IS can choose from a wide range of optical lens accessories to suit their taste.

Because a blurred photo is inevitable, Canon was able to come up with a solution to it. The Blur solution gets the data needed from the brightness of the location, the movement of the subject, the Optical Image Stabilizer and the Face Detection Technology. After which, the camera then analyzes the minimum boost in the ISO levels needed to balance the motion.

The Lens-shift optical Image Stabilizer is another great feature of this gadget because it neutralizes the shaking of the camera. It adds to the prevention of motion blur in an image.

canon

The Face Detection Technology was also upgraded by having Face Detection White Balance.

This Face Detection While Balance sets equilibrium of the faces within the frame before taking a picture. With this, the natural skin tone of the subject is highlighted. In addition, a Face Select and Track function was included plus an Image Stabilizer to reduce blur and allow users to shoot at a low-light setting. The Face Select and Track trails the face of the subject in the frame making sure that the result of the photo is at its best.

Having a red-eye in the picture cannot be avoided which is sometimes annoying especially if you really love the photo. Canon’s red-eye correction instantly removes the red spot in the eye easily to make the photo look more natural. This means that the camera automatically removes the red-eye as the photo is being shot.

Lastly, this camera has an auto-focus point zoom function that enables the photographer to magnify the subject even though the shutter button is half way pressed already. When the subject is at a low-light setting, this function is able to help the photographer take shots in focus without the hassle.

With these new additions on the camera, photo enthusiasts can be able to enjoy more taking photos of their favorite subjects any time and at any place. Also, because of these features, picture taking has definitely improved making the process understood by amateur and aspiring photographers.

MP3 Taser: Music and Protection All in One

January 13th, 2008 by Dave

Nowadays, gadgets that can perform more than one task are becoming very appealing. Take the mobile phone, for example. Most mobile phones now have cameras and multimedia players that their uses now extend to more than just making phone calls and sending text messages. Some mobile phones actually function like a pocket computer where one can do word processing and spreadsheets with ease.

But that is the mobile phone, and mobile phones are certainly something else. Can you imagine a taser that doubles as an mp3 player?

You do not have to imagine that, actually. The Scottsdale, Arizona-based Taser International (TASR) just came up with one and it is now available in the market. The taser comes in funky colors like hot pink and brilliant blue, or in patterns like leopard prints. These colors are designed to appeal to female taser users, since according to TASR, 60% of their products’ buyers are female.mp3-taser.jpg

Do not let the cheeky colors fool you, though. Each taser unit is fitted with an LED flashlight and a laser. Just point it and aim it and let fly. Even 15 feet away, Eagle Claw hooks can shoot from this taser at a would-be assailant and shock him with electric bolts that are guaranteed to make him shriek.

Most of all, this taser comes with an optional holster, and this holster can play and store up to 1GB worth of mp3 tracks. How is that for a multipurpose device? You can go out and jog to your favorite music and be protected as well.

If you are curious about the price, the taser in leopard prints can go for $379.99. Its solid-colored sisters pop for $349.99. What about the mp3-playing holster? It is a separate deal at $79.99.

Panasonic Reveals 150-inch Plasma TV

January 13th, 2008 by Dave

A plasma TV set that is practically as big as your wall. Imagine that. But if a wall doubling as a TV set is one of your dear fantasies, then you have got to rejoice at this new, beastly release from Panasonic: a 150-inch plasma TV.

panasonic-150.jpgI kid you not. It is really that monstrously big. At 8 feet by 11 feet, this new Panasonic baby can fit snuggly against one wall of your house. You had better devote one room to this TV set if you are setting your eyes on it for your very own home theater. That thing is sure to dominate your room and you need not decorate it with anything else. Just a couch, a table for your remote and your snacks and this TV set would be enough. Oh, and your DVD player and other gadgets for your home theater, of course.

You are probably thinking just how a TV set this big can perform. Will the pictures be sharp and detailed or will it appear to be overblown? Will motion be smoothly rendered? What about the blacks – are they going to stay black?

The answer to these are: the pictures will remain sharp and detailed, the motion smooth and the blacks very deep black, as can be expected from a plasma TV. After all, this baby has a 4K resolution – that is 4,000 on 1080p. Okay, close your mouth now and wipe your drool. And Panasonic says that this set is not going to be a power-guzzler for all its size. Energy consumption is going to be efficient.

Before you take out your credit card, though, know this: this new Panasonic monster is not going to be out until 2009. No news about the pricing was released by Panasonic either.

Boost Your Cellphone Signal with the MOGO Amplifier

January 7th, 2008 by Dave

Isn’t it annoying how sometimes we could not get a cellphone signal when you so urgently need to make a phone call? Or how sometimes we get cut off in the middle of a phone conversation just because the signal disappeared? Situations like these can get really frustrating, especially when it is important that we make that phone call and there are no other alternatives in sight.

mogo-signal-amplifier.jpgMOGO Wireless hopes to address this concern with its newest offering, the MOGO wireless cellular amplifier. This gadget guarantees to boost your signal to an additional two bars. The claim is that it can work with most of the major mobile networks in the United States, such as AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile and Alltel, as long as the signal band is either 800 MHz or 1,900 MHz.

One nice thing about the MOGO wireless cellular amplifier is that it is simplicity in itself. The gadget consists of a simple antenna, a power adapter that can be plugged in either a USB input or a car power adapter, and the cable that connects the two. There is no need to attach any device whatsoever on your mobile phone. Moreover, there is no need to install any software or firmware on your cellphone unit.

Quite a handy way to stay connected, isn’t it? People who need to make calls on their mobile phones will certainly appreciate this added power to their signals. And as simple as the MOGO wireless cellular amplifier may seem to be, it really does work in boosting cellphone signals. The reported downside to this device, however, is that it may need a lot of power to get the signal going.

If you want this gadget, be ready to cough up some US$149 to get your own.

Is Your Wireless Router Secure?

January 7th, 2008 by Dave

Wireless access to the Internet can be as annoying as it is convenient. When the signal is blocked or is not too strong, you can get booted out of your connection. If your router is not secured, your next-door neighbor can help himself to your wireless access without you knowing. But then again, you can’t exactly be sure if it is just your next door neighbor that you are feeding with your wireless and not your entire block.

And then, there is the lurking fear of hackers stealing your data. Feeding the whole block with your wireless access does not sound as bad as the idea of hackers stealing your data as it streams through the network from an access point. Unfortunately, as researchers from Indiana University have reported recently, it is a fear that may become reality this year, as WiFi access is poised to become more prevalent in the coming years.

Lack of security, alas, is the one at fault here. The main issue that the researchers from Indiana University stated is that most WiFi routers installed in households are not really installed securely. Dan Grabham of Tech.co.uk pointed out that:

“most manufacturers’ instructions don’t even tell you how to change the admin username and passwords from the default settings, meaning anybody who can access your wireless network can change your settings.”

The bad thing about it is that even if your router is secure, it might not be enough to keep the hackers at bay and stop your wireless from being compromised. The scary thing about it is that it is far too easy to do. They only need to ferret out your passwords. Even scarier is that one single block of code may be enough to disable thousands of networks.

Not a nice scenario to start the New Year with, but we’ll never really know.
