What is a gadget?

September 29th, 2008 by Dave

fun.jpgGadgets come in many shapes and forms, and tend to be items that either perform a function or a simply amusing and interesting.

The more useful gadgets are those that carry out more than one task – whether essential or otherwise – and become somehow a necessity rather than a luxury.

Into this bracket we can put the likes of mobile cell phones and hand held PC’s, or DVD players and blue ray machines, while many gadgets can also be useful in the kitchen.

Automatic or manual?

Take the electric can opener- undoubtedly a gadget, but one that is useful and time saving too. However, the same job can be done by a hand held manual can opener, and at much less cost, in little more time.

The idea of the gadget as labour saving device is very much part of the gadgets repute, and with such things as robot vacuum cleaners that hoover the floor when you are out, and similar gadgets that are used to mow the lawn, the usefulness of many gadgets can clearly be seen to extend beyond that of the mere fun item.

The same can be said the other way, however, as essentially useful items are modified to employ ever more fun functions – the cell phone, for instance, usually incorporates a camera, often an audio device, and sometimes the ability to surf the internet and receive and send emails.

Useful or not?

There’s no doubt that the market is peppered with gadgets that are useful, and others not so much, but the fact remains that gadgets remain an essential part of life however one looks at it. The gadget is, quite simply, everywhere – in the kitchen and the bathroom, the garden and the office, even in the car and on the street, gadgets are to be found performing this function or that to a varying level of usefulness.

It has always been the case, too, as from the very invention of the wheel – undoubtedly a gadget when it first arrived, and a labour saving device, too – through o the popular growth of the MP3 player – itself inspired by the ground breaking Walkman of years before – gadgets have always performed distinct functions, and though the wheel is certainly a necessity, the MP3 player is simply something that we buy to enjoy.

What was the first gadget?

September 29th, 2008 by Dave

balance boardIt’s not an important question, and nor is it the answer to any great world problems, but has it occurred to you to ask what was the first gadget?

Given that gadget is defined as ‘small and with a particular function’ it is safe to say that gadgets have been with us since time immemorial, and that our most distant ancestors may have been the creators of the original gadget.

We know that cavemen used tools fashioned from flint, sharpened especially to chop and cut – these could well be classed as gadgets. Think of the modern equivalent, the hunting knife or Swiss army knife, for instance, and the hand crafted flint tool; suddenly becomes a contender for the role of gadget without much argument at all.

Caveman also used fire, and our ancient ancestors were quick to cotton on to the flame as a method of heat and cooking, as well as a useful weapon, but can fire itself be considered a gadget?

Not really – it is too far outside the definition- but the tool that started the fire could, with ease.

Think of today’s fire creating gadget – take the famous Zippo lighter – and think of the cave man rubbing two pieces of flint, or dried sticks, together to create sparks and ignite his fire – that is the gadget, the ancient Zippo that ignites the vital flame.

This method enabled man to cook, and to keep warm, and enabled him to create torches so that he could see in the dark, and it’s no small wonder that deep in our minds we still consider a gadget that can start a fire an essential tool.

Then there’s that ancient invention that may just be the greatest gadget of all – the wheel.

Quite who came up with the concept we will never know, but we do know that wheels have been around for thousands of years, and that the item fits the functional description of a gadget very well indeed.

Wheels enable us to get from A to B with much greater efficiency – think where we would be without them – and have taken on the unique design properties that items do when they become gadgetised; open any lads magazine and you will find adverts for designer alloy wheels, created to make any car stand out from the crowd, but still providing the same purpose as before – going round and round and helping the car move.

Household gadgets

September 29th, 2008 by Dave

aurea.jpgMore and more we are finding gadgets that are apparently useful around the home, those that are not designed just for fun, but have a purpose too.

Generally, the purpose is one of time and labour saving, and a great number of these gadgets do a job that can be done just as easily without purchasing said gadget, yet the attraction of being able to sit back and let a gadget do the work is always appealing.

The robot hoover

Among these, one of the favourites in recent years is the robot vacuum cleaner or hoover, a gadget that performs an essential task in a non-essential way. Of course, watching a machine do the floors is amusing, but this gadget extends far beyond being a mere item of interest.

It works by roaming around the room on wheels, and changing direction, in a seemingly random but actually pre planned manner, whenever it hits a wall or item of furniture. It is also programmed to ‘go to sleep’ when its on board computer tells it the job has been completed, and is charged from the mains electricity overnight.

The drawbacks

This is a great gadget for doing a job that you really don’t want to do, particularly as it can be done when you are out, but there are drawbacks – it can’t climb stairs, has a problem with split level floors, and can only do the room it has been left in.

Useful though they are, most gadgets do have their limitations – even those that are designed to be of help, such as the robot hoover described, or the satellite navigation device that doesn’t differentiate between a farm track and a dual carriageway. Many an enormous truck has become stranded in this manner, particularly in rural areas where the roads are not so well mapped.

Common sense

The sat-nav – like the robot hoover, highlights the very reason why relying on gadgets can be a dangerous escapade – well, not necessarily dangerous, but hardly a wise choice – as they do not possess that one thing that is inherent in most humans – common sense.

Common sense tells us that the road we are on is a track through a field and not Route 66, and tells us that we haven’t hovered that bit in the corner that is thick with dust.

However, it fails to tell us that we don’t need more gadgets!

Garden gadgets

September 29th, 2008 by Dave

ferg.jpgWhat can be better than hot summer day, lounging in the garden with a barbecue sizzling away and a cold glass of wine in ones hand, listening to the silence that comes with a rare day off?

Easy – a garden full of gadgets could be much better!

The barbecue that cheats

Take that barbecue, for instance, have you just spent a frustrating hour trying to get the coals to light, and wasted a bottle of lighter fuel in the process? If so, why? Just get down to your local garden supplies centre, and buy a gas-fired barbecue, one that cheats, but cheats well. Simple to light, with refillable gas canisters, you can have a beautiful barbecue in seconds, and even more time to relax.

What about the lawn – does it need cutting? Of course, summer is the season when the grass grows quickest, and we all know what a chore it is to have to get the mower out every week and waste an hour going up and down.

Watch the grass get cut

Well, that is no longer the case, for while sitting there drinking wine and watching your gas barbecue cook the steaks, the lawn could be cut for you, by a robot lawn mower!

Robot mowers are all the rage, as people take to the decking on summer evenings and a small vehicle runs around the lawn, bouncing off the carefully hidden wires that you’ve used to define the edges, cutting as it does. Programmed to run for a set time, or just left to run at random, these gadgets are the must have summer item, providing not just a useful tool but a talking point too. Worryingly, though, they don’t know the difference between grass, a naked foot, or a rabbit, so it’s important to keep children and animals clear!

Garden lighting

And talking of warm, balmy summer evenings isn’t it a shame when darkness descends and everyone has to return indoors?

Well, yes, it is, but that’s only the case if you haven’t invested in the latest in garden lighting – the solar powered light.

These come in all shapes and sizes, and take their power from the sun during the day before coming to life automatically as a built in sensor notices dusk descending – a fabulous effect that adds to the magic of the occasion, or simply lights up an ordinary summer evening in the garden.

AND THE MADNESS CONTINUES…

September 13th, 2008 by Dave

fone1.bmpWalking kilometers long for a phone call,
Those were the days of history to cherish.
Today with new-fangled instruments in our hand,
Thrash parents saying move on man…
Unfortunately, this series will never end…

May it be hot trend to change mobiles all the time, but this has been possible only because of marketing tactics of mobile industry. If it wouldn’t have been brilliant marketing tactics, mobile industry would have been down with the muck. Carbon Black Nokia 8800’s killing looks are tempting. If I say, money itself get attracted towards today’s trend like I Phone, then I wouldn’t be an inch wrong. Such expensive phones are worth the money as; the assurance about convenience offered by them is incomparable. Gadget comprising of features equivalent to laptop to tough to give a miss.

Everyone has different requirements in their mobile phones to satisfy their desire or needs, depends upon the usability irrespective of durability. Lets face the fact; we look for mobile phones with more features than considering the long lasting factor. Handset used 3-4 years ago is considered an antique piece today. Eg- Nokia 3315 is rarely to be seen today. Many such mobile handsets whose production has been stopped for new launches hold no price value in the market. The fear that IT industry is lacking back in growth might come true in few years.

Navigator, MMS, 5-mega-pixel camera, screen touch operation, Internet, bluetooth, PDA, expandable memory, substitute of pandrive, etc are few of the expansively attractive features anyone would give their heart for. India’s economy is surely improving comparatively at an alarming rate. Don’t be surprised if you stop as expensive cell phone as I Phone or communicator with vegetable vendors or rickshaw walas. In such cases, tagging the year 2000 as ancient era wouldn’t be wrong. So in the year 2000, mobile phones were treated as necessity and today this approach is seen nowhere.

Does this mean we have stopped valuing money and are distracted from serious investment? Is this madness going to take us anywhere beneficially? Is changing mobile phone every month or two is going to help in anyways? What will all this lead us to eventually? All the questions will remain unanswered forever.

The Eco Friendly Gadgets

August 17th, 2008 by Dave

alpha400Gadgets have fused into our lives inevitably, in fact serving us their worth. But, do we even give a piece of time thinking about the how the gadgets that we hang around with affect our environment?  The answer is a blatant no! Most of the gadgets used have widespread affects to the environment- after all everything comes with a cost! A cost much more than the maximum retail price!

Give credits to the years of research or the need of the hour due to rising petroleum prices and high risk concerns about global warming, the leading manufacturers to have now started coming up with greener products. Being eco friendly is the latest fad that’s hit on the world and it should rightly be too. After the launch of cars running on solar power, its now, the turn of mobile phones to go green.

Samsung came up with their new product the E200 eco that boasts of being more eco friendly than any other cell phone.  With the launch of this product, Samsung has stood up true, to its claims of working hard to create more number of products that are as much as green as possible. Samsung also visions to proactively setup and expand to the better, a phone recycling system. So, what’s the gaga around E200 eco? This cell phone differs from its counterparts, right from the process of manufacturing. Usually, cell phones are built using polycarbonate plastics, which again is a petroleum based product. Needless to say, the recycling costs and production costs are higher, leave alone other environmental concerns. E200 comes as a refreshing change! It replaces polycarbonate plastics with bio-plastics! Yes, it’s built up of bio-plastics, which are made up of materials like corn, which are plant-based products. This cell phone that’s due to arrive in markets of Europe in September was displayed in an event that took place alongside the ongoing Olympics. The usage of this product will not just reduce the production of non renewable plastics; the manufacturing process involved reportedly reduces fuel consumption to a good extent and sizes down the carbon-di-oxide emissions by 35%.

Other eco friendly products too are creating waves around. Take for example, DLink’s Green Wi-Fi router that saves around 40% of the power usage. The gadgets those were always helpful and slowly rose up to being one of the necessity’s of life, by going green has turned responsible too!

Gadgets For Your Kitchen

August 17th, 2008 by Dave

aurea.jpgThis one is a must read for those who sat stern with preconceived notions about gadgets not quite going hand-in-hand with the one of the most important parts of your home- your kitchen! Somehow, the idea of gadgets isn’t quite taken seriously in the kitchen. We all are aware and accustomed to the usual electronic consumer machines like the refrigerator, microwave oven, sandwich maker etc. Those truly are the jewels of any kitchen. However, one often tends to despise the smaller gadgets that are meant for kitchens, usually for reasons quite obscure. These gadgets may add on a lot into saving your time and energy, and you’ll be aware of it once you’ve tried them out!

Here is a list of few nice ideas that you may love to adorn your kitchen with.

•    The mini magnetic spoons: The concept must have been clear by the self-descriptive name. Mini magnetic spoons offered by Progressive, comes in various sizes as the traditional spoons. But, with magnetic spoons around you don’t have to bother your hands searching for the right ones in the loose cluster of spoons that makes for a trademark utensil drawer. These ‘stick together’ spoons will reduce a lot of time of yours that otherwise was spent meddling around with utensils. $5 isn’t a heavy price for them? Is it?
•    The dual kitchen timer: West Bend’s dual timer helps you in keeping in track of your oven without you having to be there. Agreed that all microwave have timers, but this one’s a carry around timer! No more of burning up dishes that’s loved by your loved ones. This timer allows you to time two dishes at the same time and what more? It even comes up with a built-in memory feature that keeps tracks of previous times and recalls them.
•    Measuring cup: If your measurements are wrong, it may eventually lead on to spoil your dish! But with KitchenArt Adjust-a-cup measuring cup you can be rest assured about your measurements. All those measuring cups that you used to rather suffer with till date will find an excellent replacement with this smart adjustable cup. The cup has measurements marked in millimeters, ounces and cups. The cup can be adjusted to proper measurement line by twisting the base and a push to the base upwards removes the sticky ingredients on your cup.

These were just three out of the umpteen that’ll spruce up your kitchen. These little things add on a lot to the bigger picture!
