Christmas holidays are just a few weeks away. People will be traveling or just staying at home for this special season. Most would be just relaxing at home and watching movies in their entertainment sets. But for people-on-the-go, you don’t have to leave your home entertainment at home.

For those traveling, usually you get bored during the long hours of driving and staying at the back seat of the car. People who are used to having their usual entertainments at home are forced to leave these luxuries once they travel. This would also be a danger for those having their business trips and they won’t have any idea whether they would be provided with the appropriate audio-visual facilities for their presentations.

Now some manufacturers came up with something to solve this. Portable DVD unit is small but have a lot of features that includes a portable DVD television and a NES emulator for the kids.

These DVD units can connect to anything because it has an AV in and out points, a disk port, USP port, card readers for SD, MS and MMC. It can also accommodate from DVD to CD or RW disks and JPEG, WMA, MPEG, MP3 formats easily.

Those people who travel but wants to bring their comforts with them or for people who needs to have a presentation in places with little audio-visual facilities would want to have this. But it would cost a few hundred bucks.

The portable DVD players which are dual have more than the portable DVD player in the stores. These dual portable DVD players have their own 14inch LCD TV screen that moves on all sides, connected to its unit.

This DVD is to be bought for the next vacation.

Wonder of digital devices

October 29th, 2008 by Dave

digital-device.jpg

Long long ago, we use mini cassettes when we record something into our tape deck. But now, this is now replaced with a faster and easier device that can record high quality audio and it is rather cheap.

This new record device produces no unnecessary noise and has fewer moving parts. It can also store huge amounts of audio and it is smaller and durable than tape recorders. In standard formatting, those audio that are recorded can easily be edited, shared, stored, managed and searched.

When you plan to find a device that records digital sound, you need to think first about what audio quality you want. If it is compressed audio, then that would be good for voicemail, memos or informal recordings. For less compressed audio like the stereo, it can be used for shared audio like podcasts. High quality audio can be fit for recordings of music.

Aside from recording medium format and the device, here are some factors that would affect the quality of your recording:

1.      The first place used in the recording will have better quality. A recording done in a studio would sound much better in the start than something you shot on a busy road.

2.      The microphone: its quality and connection to the device for audio. Higher quality is equal to higher payment. So an expensive microphone would get higher quality sound pick-up than a cheap karaoke mic.

The mic is only an audio input device. Digital recorders that can record using an external mic will accept line-in audio recording from any audio device.

When is a gadget not a gadget?

August 21st, 2008 by Dave

ferg.jpgA dictionary definition of ‘gadget’ is ‘a small[1] technological object (such as a device or an appliance) that has a particular function, but is often thought of as a novelty.’

Gadgets are loved, and hated, in equal measure, and have been with us for a long time. Some gadgets, while still novel, can be of great assistance, while others are simply for enjoyment, and of little, or sometimes no, use at all.

If we think of a necessary gadget, we think of such as a mobile phone.

When mobile cell phones first came onto the market, they were so new and unusual that how they looked, and what they did beyond making and receiving calls was of no importance. Now, as we approach the end of the first decade of the 21st century, the mobile is considered so much a part of everyday life that, while still technically in the realms of gadgetry, manufacturers are loading them with more and more features in order to make them more attractive than a rival offering.

Think about it – who actually needs a camera on a phone? How often would one have thought of taking a photograph if the opportunity to do so had not been there? And then there are the myriad games that suppliers are keen to tell us about, and phones with internet access, with music players, and so on.

If we tale a step back and look at the development of the mobile phone in recent years something becomes clear: what started life as a gadget that would soon, clearly, become a very useful instrument, very quickly became an everyday object outside of the realm of gadgets. In order to make their phone more marketable, what the suppliers have done is take a non-gadget, a daily object, and convert it back into a gadget.

The phone is no longer a phone, it is a small technological object that has a particular function but is, after all, packed with novelty features.

It will be worth watching over the years how manufacturers build on the popularity of the current gadgetry fad that is sweeping the world, that of the satellite navigation device, or Satnav.

Already, with a market teeming with different models and prices falling at an alarming rate, the need to make your satnav stand out from the one in the shop next door is buzzing through the minds of the marketing men.

Watch this space as satnav goes from gadget, to useful item, and back to gadget again, just as the mobile phone has already done.

Portable Projector for Micro SD Card

April 22nd, 2008 by Dave

Because gadgets and memory storage are getting smaller in size but getting bigger in memory storage these days, almost everyone wants something that’s small.  So small that people can actually bring wherever they want.  Portable gadgets are becoming a hit in the modern world.  There are already portable radios through the mobile phones.  Portable DVD players also have been created; these can also be installed in one’s vehicle for added family entertainment.

Memory storage is also one thing that is being developed.  Now, aside from an internal memory, there are other mobile phones that can be inserted with memory cards.  This enables phone memory expansion that will be able to store all those pictures, videos, music and other things that you need to keep in your mobile phone.

Memory cards are even getting smaller in size.  Perhaps in the near future, memory cards will be so small that it will not be visible to the naked eye.  Hence, it will just be inserted in the mobile phone already or other things that can be used such as digital cameras.

The constant want to have more portable gadgets paved the way for the portable projector for the Micro SD card to be created.  This projector does not need to be plugged in an electricity socket because it operates by means of four AA batteries.  Movies can be easily played using this gadget.

This portable projector is available from Drink Stuff.  It only measures 105mm wide and 165mm long.  Now that really is a portable gadget.  The maximum screen size is only about one meter square making it not recommendable for people who are thinking of making this a home projection unit.

Another advantage of having this gadget is that carrying it around is not a hassle.  The entertainment it can provide bored individuals cannot be perhaps surpassed.  Also, people can use this anywhere and anytime they want to.  Boredom is something people won’t experience with this.

Aside from playing files coming from the SD card, the projector can also be plugged in DVD players.  But individuals are reminded that the projector is not built for such.  Extra care should be done when doing this.

More so, this portable projector has images and MP3 functions which makes it more versatile than other portable entertainment gadgets in the market.  Not only can people watch movies but they can also view photos and even get to listen to music during a boring day.

Despite the many things that this gadget has to offer, it has a downfall.  Yes, this gadget operates using four AA batteries.  If regular batteries are used then the energy stored in it will be drained instantly.  So it is recommended that rechargeable batteries are to be used to ensure longer usage of the said gadget.  There is nothing wrong with using regular batteries, it’s just that buying regular batteries may cost you a fortune.  Just be sure to bring along extra batteries so that the fun won’t stop.

The EYETOY is the one for you! Sony EyeToy will help you realize your dream of being a cast in your own game! This device was created for Playstation 2 and PSP. Dr. Richard Marks invented EyeToy. This colored digicam gadget uses computer vision to allow you as a “player” to interact with the games. It uses color detection, motion and sound. The sound is transmitted through the microphone built in it. Logitech, being the master for webcams, partnered with Sony and manufactured the camera.

Power consumption of this peripheral is 50 mA and dimensions are 44 x 53 x 89. It weighs 173 grams and has a cable length of 2 meters. The resolution is 640 x 480 pixels. The EyeToy is designed to be placed on top of the television or console. You can position it the way youwant, capturing the angle you prefer. You may also focus the camera by rotating the ring on the lens. The blue light in the EyeToy is an indicator that the PS2 or PSP is on and are both ready to be used. The red light will flash if there is lack of light. This device is dependent on the light that aids in capturing the player’s image.

Here’s more information from the new Sony EyeToy, you can even use your EyeToy as a webcam to connect to your desktop or laptop. Since EyeToy can be connected using USB plug, drivers are available so your EyeToy model can be compatible to the operating system of your computer. It can also be used to shoot movies and video messaging. You can even have your personal avatar uploaded to your playstation. The system of Cameo lets the player upload their own image and use it as an avatar in games. The program scans the head of the player and will create a 3D head model that can later be saved on a memory card.

Now, come on and let’s go get ourselves into the world of game!

450 Mbps Chipset

January 31st, 2008 by Dave

Computer users nowadays want faster and more efficient gadgets because they are always on the go and trying to beat the deadlines no matter which part of the globe they are in. And in order to meet this demand, other people and companies are already trying to create a chipset that would be able to cope up with a fast-paced life of a person. That drive to achieve and be able to develop something better pushes people to their limits in inventing things that enables man to live an easier life.

Through the patience and careful planning of Marvell, a semiconductor maker was able to design and create a chipset far better than the others in terms of speed and distance range. This chipset is faster than the current chipsets in the market. The TopDog wireless 802.11n chipsets utilize three receivers and three transmitters. With this new ingenuity, the said chipset is able to reach speeds up to 450 Megabits per second (Mbps) at maximum. That’s an additional speed of 380 Mbps when compared to WiMax’s 70 Mbps chipset.

And with WiFi booming, people are looking for means of getting faster connections. Having faster connections means getting the job done easily and when the job is finished, people can jump and work on something else. Constantly, this search has made man more meticulous in choosing the right devices that would suit their needs. They sometimes stumble upon gadgets that really don’t meet their standards but they have to make do with what is already out.

With this breakthrough, other semiconductor manufacturers would have a hard time toppling off this latest thing on the technology ladder. In addition to its speed, the chipset is said to be able to increase the signal range by 160 percent. Moreover, the TopDog wireless chipset can provide 500% wireless range.

That gives users a better chance of being able to connect to the internet without having trouble finding a signal. And because of its speed, users are now able to access websites and exchange data without waiting too long for the information to be sent. These innovations are vital for the growth of the world’s technology. And with the constant release of new gadgets such as these, perhaps it will not take long for the world to become a paperless society.

The chipset is the first of its kind thus setting a higher standard for the other companies on the same field. Though this chipset has not yet been released in the market, it is scheduled to be ready for mass shipment on the second quarter of this year.

MP3 Taser: Music and Protection All in One

January 13th, 2008 by Dave

Nowadays, gadgets that can perform more than one task are becoming very appealing. Take the mobile phone, for example. Most mobile phones now have cameras and multimedia players that their uses now extend to more than just making phone calls and sending text messages. Some mobile phones actually function like a pocket computer where one can do word processing and spreadsheets with ease.

But that is the mobile phone, and mobile phones are certainly something else. Can you imagine a taser that doubles as an mp3 player?

You do not have to imagine that, actually. The Scottsdale, Arizona-based Taser International (TASR) just came up with one and it is now available in the market. The taser comes in funky colors like hot pink and brilliant blue, or in patterns like leopard prints. These colors are designed to appeal to female taser users, since according to TASR, 60% of their products’ buyers are female.mp3-taser.jpg

Do not let the cheeky colors fool you, though. Each taser unit is fitted with an LED flashlight and a laser. Just point it and aim it and let fly. Even 15 feet away, Eagle Claw hooks can shoot from this taser at a would-be assailant and shock him with electric bolts that are guaranteed to make him shriek.

Most of all, this taser comes with an optional holster, and this holster can play and store up to 1GB worth of mp3 tracks. How is that for a multipurpose device? You can go out and jog to your favorite music and be protected as well.

If you are curious about the price, the taser in leopard prints can go for $379.99. Its solid-colored sisters pop for $349.99. What about the mp3-playing holster? It is a separate deal at $79.99.

“Putting Your Money Where Your Principles Are”

December 15th, 2007 by Dave

It’s very, very late, but it really did escape my attention that Google finally announced that it is bidding for the precious 700MHz spectrum that the FCC will be auctioning out on January 24 next year. In the official Google blog, Chris Sacca, Google’s head of special initiatives, it is Google’s way of putting “our money where our principles are.”

Why is Google bothering to make the effort to bid for the 700MHz spectrum? For the meantime, let’s forget that whoever wins the auction can get a lot of benefits from it in terms of business. Google claims that the realm of the wireless services is a closed realm, with only a few big names dominating it. Google wants to see this realm to be as open as the Internet is today.

It is all noble and good, and I certainly hope that Google is going to stay true to what it said. It is getting exceedingly rare nowadays to see companies putting the welfare of consumers first (supposedly). FCC certainly tried to pave the way when it ruled that whoever wins the 700MHz spectrum will allow consumers to use whatever mobile device that they want and to use whatever application that they want on their mobile device using their network.

But that doesn’t stop the speculation that Google may just be paying lip service and is just bluffing; according to rumors, Google will only shell out the minimum $4.6B required just to get FCC to continue enforcing their controversial ruling. Goodness knows it would sound so bad if Google is just bluffing.

So I fervently hope that the rumors are wrong, that Google is not bluffing and that it is really testing a wireless network at Mountain View. Because some of us still want to believe that there are still companies out there who do care.

Microsoft Airs Out the Changelog for Vista SP1

December 8th, 2007 by Dave

vistalogo.jpgThose of you who have been wondering about the changes Microsoft will include with the Windows Vista Service Pack 1 ever since it was announced now have something to chew on. Microsoft just published a detailed changelog of what can be expected when Vista SP1 comes out next year. But more than that, the first public beta-test release will be available from the Microsoft Download Center by next week. That is even something more to chew on.

Here is an excerpt of the changelog for Vista SP1.

  • Improves the performance of browsing network file shares by consuming less bandwidth.
  • Improves power consumption when the display is not changing by allowing the processor to remain in its sleep state which consumes less energy.
  • Addresses the problem of the Video chipset (VSync interrupt) not allowing the system to stay asleep.
  • Improves power consumption and battery life by addressing an issue that causes a hard disk to continue spinning when it should spin down, in certain circumstances.
  • Improves the speed of adding and extracting files to and from a compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Significantly improves the speed of moving a directory with many files underneath.
  • Improves performance while copying files using BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service).
  • Improves performance over Windows Vista’s current performance across the following scenarios:
    • 25% faster when copying files locally on the same disk on the same machine.
    • 45% faster when copying files from a remote non-Windows Vista system to a SP1 system.
    • 50% faster when copying files from a remote SP1 system to a local SP1 system.
  • Improves responsiveness when doing many kinds of file or media manipulations. For example, with Windows Vista today, copying files after deleting a different set of files can make the copy operation take longer than needed. In SP1, the file copy time is the same as if no files were initially deleted.
  • Improves the copy progress estimation when copying files within Windows Explorer to about two seconds.
  • Improves the time to read large images by approximately 50%.

It’s probably going to be as good as it is going to get, at least for now.
