fun.jpgGadgets come in many shapes and forms, and tend to be items that either perform a function or a simply amusing and interesting.

The more useful gadgets are those that carry out more than one task – whether essential or otherwise – and become somehow a necessity rather than a luxury.

Into this bracket we can put the likes of mobile cell phones and hand held PC’s, or DVD players and blue ray machines, while many gadgets can also be useful in the kitchen.

Automatic or manual?

Take the electric can opener- undoubtedly a gadget, but one that is useful and time saving too. However, the same job can be done by a hand held manual can opener, and at much less cost, in little more time.

The idea of the gadget as labour saving device is very much part of the gadgets repute, and with such things as robot vacuum cleaners that hoover the floor when you are out, and similar gadgets that are used to mow the lawn, the usefulness of many gadgets can clearly be seen to extend beyond that of the mere fun item.

The same can be said the other way, however, as essentially useful items are modified to employ ever more fun functions – the cell phone, for instance, usually incorporates a camera, often an audio device, and sometimes the ability to surf the internet and receive and send emails.

Useful or not?

There’s no doubt that the market is peppered with gadgets that are useful, and others not so much, but the fact remains that gadgets remain an essential part of life however one looks at it. The gadget is, quite simply, everywhere – in the kitchen and the bathroom, the garden and the office, even in the car and on the street, gadgets are to be found performing this function or that to a varying level of usefulness.

It has always been the case, too, as from the very invention of the wheel – undoubtedly a gadget when it first arrived, and a labour saving device, too – through o the popular growth of the MP3 player – itself inspired by the ground breaking Walkman of years before – gadgets have always performed distinct functions, and though the wheel is certainly a necessity, the MP3 player is simply something that we buy to enjoy.
